Panthers QB Bryce Young will start against Broncos after Andy Dalton sprains thumb in car crash

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Bryce Young will start Sunday at quarterback for the Carolina Panthers against the Denver Broncos after Andy Dalton sprained the thumb on his right throwing hand during a car crash in Charlotte. Panthers coach Dave Canales made the announcement Wednesday after practice. Dalton did not practice. Canales said there were no serious injuries in Tuesday’s crash, and the 36-year-old Dalton will be listed as day to day. Canales said it’s possible that Dalton could be the team’s No. 2 quarterback on Sunday. Young was benched two games into the season after starting 0-2. Panthers’ Andy Dalton, family involved in car crash. QB being evaluated by team doctors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers quarterback Andy Dalton and his family were involved in a car crash on Tuesday. A Panthers spokesman says Dalton is being evaluated by team medical personnel. No one from Dalton’s family needed to be taken to a hospital. The team says the 36-year-old Dalton, his wife, three children and the family dog were traveling near downtown Charlotte when the crash occurred. Panthers sticking with Andy Dalton at quarterback even after 2 interceptions in loss to Falcons

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers have lost three straight games since Andy Dalton delivered a feel-good win over the Las Vegas Raiders just days after first-year head coach Dave Canales made a bold move and benched 2023 No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young. But Canales said he has no plans to go back to Young. He said Dalton will start next week at Washington despite a costly fourth-quarter interception in a 38-20 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers’ stunning 36-22 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders showed that coach Dave Canales was correct when he said Andy Dalton gives his team the best chance to win. At the same time it increases concern about Bryce Young’s ability right now to lead the team and raises even more questions about his chances of being a franchise quarterback. Dalton did all the things the ineffective Young hasn’t been able to do for most of his brief NFL career: force defenses to respect the passing game, move the Panthers down the field and score points. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Andy Dalton gave the Panthers the quarterback play they’ve been sorely lacking, throwing for 319 yards and three touchdowns to lead Carolina past the Las Vegas Raiders 36-22. Promoted to the starting job in place of the ineffective Bryce Young, Dalton guided the Panthers to their first win and moved to 4-0 lifetime against the Raiders. Carolina is 3-17 going back to last season. The Panthers were blown out the first two weeks this year, prompting coach Dave Canales to bench Young. (AP) — Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young says he was surprised to learn from head coach Dave Canales that he had been benched and accepted blame for the team’s struggles on the field. He says the news was not something he was expecting but added that he has respect for Canales and the organization. Young is 2-16 as an NFL starter since he arrived in Carolina amid high expectations after being selected No. 1 overall in the 2023 draft.
