Olivia Thomas scores on a free kick to secure UNC’s first women’s soccer championship since 2012

CARY, N.C. (AP) — Olivia Thomas scored on a free kick in the 62nd minute for her fourth goal of the NCAA Tournament and North Carolina beat Wake Forest 1-0 on Monday night for the program’s first national championship since 2012. North Carolina (22-5-0) has won 22 of the 43 NCAA women’s soccer titles. The Tar Heels also won the 1981 AIAW title to total 23 national championships. No other women’s soccer team owns more than four. Wake Forest (16-4-4) was playing in the championship game for the first time in program history. The Demon Deacons were seeking just the 11th national championship in school history. UNC has 51 NCAA team championships across eight different sports.… Read More

NEW YORK (AP) — A slide for market superstar Nvidia helped pull U.S. stock indexes down from their records. The S&P 500 fell 0.6% Monday, coming off its 57th all-time high of the year so far. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.5%, and the Nasdaq composite dropped 0.6% from its own record. Nvidia was the market’s heaviest weight after China said it’s probing the chip giant for potential antitrust violations. Man in custody had a gun, mask and writings tying him to killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO, police say

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City’s police commissioner says police have arrested a 26-year-old with a weapon “consistent with” the gun used in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Thompson died in a dawn ambush Wednesday as he walked to the company’s annual investor conference from his hotel to the company’s annual investor conference across the street. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Luigi Nicholas Mangione was taken into custody Monday. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said said at a news conference that Mangione was taken into custody after police got a tip that he had been spotted at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania.… Read More

Former New England Patriots coach and six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick says he had “a couple of good conversations” with North Carolina Chancellor Lee Roberts amid his discussions about the Tar Heels’ head-coaching job. Belichick appeared on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” on Monday. He said he had spent the 11 months since his departure from the Patriots taking a “longer look” at the college level. Veteran Daniel Penny is acquitted in NYC subway chokehold case over Jordan Neely’s death

NEW YORK (AP) — A Marine veteran who put an agitated subway rider in a chokehold on a New York subway has been acquitted in the man’s death. A Manhattan jury cleared Daniel Penny on Monday of criminally negligent homicide charges. The verdict came after a more serious manslaughter charge was dismissed because the jury deadlocked on that count. The case arose from Jordan Neely’s May 2023 death and became a prism for differing views about public safety, valor and vigilantism. WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump is calling for an immediate cease-fire in Russia’s war with Ukraine and the president-elect is renewing warnings that he’s open to pulling the United States out of NATO. Trump made his cease-fire proposal after a weekend meeting in Paris with French and Ukrainian leaders, claiming in a social media post that Kyiv “would like to make a deal” to end the more than 1,000-day war. The Kremlin responded that it’s open to negotiations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said any deal would have to pave the way to a lasting peace. Stolen ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ are auctioned for $28 million

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A pair of ruby slippers that were worn by Judy Garland in “The Wizard of Oz” and stolen nearly two decades ago have fetched $28 million at auction. The iconic slippers were auctioned off to the highest bidder Saturday. Heritage Auctions had estimated that they would fetch $3 million or more. Including the auction house’s fee, the final cost to the buyer is $32.5 million. The slippers were on display at the Judy Garland Museum in her hometown of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, in 2005 when a thief used a hammer to smash the glass of the door and display case. NEW YORK (AP) — As the search for UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killer stretches into a fourth day and beyond the New York City limits, investigators are reckoning with a tantalizing dichotomy. They have troves of evidence, but the shooter remains an enigma. Retracing his steps using surveillance video, it now appears he left the city on a bus soon after the shooting Wednesday morning outside the New York Hilton Midtown. He was seen on video at an uptown bus station about 45 minutes later. The FBI announced late Friday that it was offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
