DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Chandler Rivers scored on an interception return, Todd Pelino kicked three field goals and Duke beat Florida State for the first time in 23 all-time meetings, winning 23-16 on Friday night. Star Thomas ran for 88 yards and a touchdown and the Blue Devils (6-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) bounced back from their first loss of the season nearly two weeks earlier. Panthers sticking with Andy Dalton at quarterback even after 2 interceptions in loss to Falcons

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers have lost three straight games since Andy Dalton delivered a feel-good win over the Las Vegas Raiders just days after first-year head coach Dave Canales made a bold move and benched 2023 No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young. But Canales said he has no plans to go back to Young. He said Dalton will start next week at Washington despite a costly fourth-quarter interception in a 38-20 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Jerry Kelly holds on for first PGA Tour Champions victory in 2 years

CARY, N.C. (AP) — Jerry Kelly is a winner on the PGA Tour Champions again. Kelly shot a 67 in the final round of the SAS Championship and survived a bogey on the final hole. He was leading by two shots until a three-putt from about 40 feet on the closing hole at Prestonwood Country Club. Padraig Harrington made birdie on the par-5 17th. Harrington was tied for the lead until missing the green from the fairway on the 18th hole. He chipped 8 feet by and missed the par putt to force a playoff. NASCAR honors longtime AP auto racing writer Mike Harris as 2025 Squier-Hall award recipient

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Retired motorsports writer Mike Harris of The Associated Press on Sunday was named recipient of the 2025 Squier-Hall Award for NASCAR Media Excellence. Harris became the 13th winner of the award, which is displayed in the NASCAR Hall of Fame in downtown Charlotte. Harris joined the AP in 1969 and became lead motorsports reporter in 1980 — a role he held until retirement in July 2009. The Squier-Hall Award is voted upon by a panel of NASCAR and NASCAR Hall of Fame executives, active and retired media members, and former NASCAR competitors and industry leaders. It is named after NASCAR media figures Ken Squier and Barney Hall, the first two recipients of the award.… Continue Reading

North Carolina football player Tylee Craft dies from rare lung cancer at 23

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina football player Tylee Craft has died from a rare form of lung cancer. Coach Mack Brown made the announcement in his postgame news conference following the Tar Heels’ loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday. Craft was 23. Brown said he didn’t learn of Craft’s death until after the game. The team had honored Craft during Saturday’s game by wearing shirts bearing Craft’s name and number. UNC had honored Craft’s family on the field. Receiver J.J. Jones also wore Craft’s jersey during the game. Craft played a reserve role in 2020 and 2021 before his diagnosis in March 2022.… Continue Reading

Jamal Haynes scampers 68 yards in final minute, lifting Georgia Tech over North Carolina 41-34

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Jamal Haynes ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns, including a go-ahead 68-yard score in the final minute, as Georgia Tech defeated North Carolina 41-34. Haynes’ second score came with 16 seconds left, just two plays after North Carolina had tied it on a Noah Burnette 26-yard field goal. The Yellow Jackets mustered 505 total yards, including 371 rushing. In addition to Haynes, quarterback Haynes King also had a big day with a season-high 107 yards and two scores on the ground. North Carolina pulled within 34-31 with 3:27 left on a 1-yard run by Jacolby Criswell, his second touchdown of the day and Burnette’s field goal tied it with 44 seconds remaining. The ACC believes it should earn more NCAA Tournament berths. It’s time to make that happen

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Atlantic Coast Conference is trying to bolster its chances of getting more bids to the NCAA Tournament. League coaches and officials have spent months trying to change perception of the ACC’s strength. That comes after the ACC has managed just five bids in each of past three men’s tournaments. Yet the league continues to outperform every other league. That includes having four different teams reach the Final Four in the past three seasons. Former UNC great Danny Green, a 3-point sharpshooter, announces NBA retirement

Danny Green, the sharpshooting guard who won an NCAA championship at North Carolina before helping three different franchises win NBA championships, announced his retirement as a player on Thursday. Green won NBA titles with San Antonio in 2014, Toronto in 2019 and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, and was a starter on all three of those clubs. He averaged 8.7 points over parts of 15 pro seasons. Green says “I’m at peace with it. I wasn’t at first, but I think it’s one of those things — once I turned 37, the body started reacting a little differently.”… Continue Reading

2 teams suing NASCAR ask court to allow them to compete under new charter agreement as case proceeds

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The two teams suing NASCAR have asked for a court order to compete under the 2025 charter agreement as their antitrust case moves through federal court. 23XI Racing is owned by Michael Jordan, veteran driver Denny Hamlin and Curtis Polk. Front Row Motorsports is owned by Bob Jenkins. The teams sued NASCAR and chairman Jim France last week, accusing NASCAR of being “monopolistic bullies” in the new charter system that they refused to sign.… Continue Reading

NCAA’s $2.78 billion settlement with colleges to allow athlete payments gets preliminary approval

A judge has given preliminary approval to the $2.78 billion legal settlement that figures to transform college sports. U.S District Judge Claudia Wilken released an order Monday setting a timeline for a deal that would put millions of dollars into the pockets of college athletes, who can begin applying for payment on Oct. 18. A final hearing is set for April 2025. If finalized, the deal would allow the biggest schools to establish a pool of about $21.5 million in the first year to distribute to athletes, who would still be able to cut name, image and likeness deals with outside groups.… Continue Reading
