Panthers send WR Diontae Johnson, 6th-round pick to Ravens, get back 5th-rounder, AP source says

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — According to a person familiar with the situation, the Carolina Panthers have traded wide receiver Diontae Johnson and a sixth-round pick in 2025 to Baltimore for the Ravens’ 2025 fifth-rounder. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press on Tuesday because the trade has not been made official. Johnson has been Carolina’s leading wide receiver since being acquired in an offseason trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has 30 receptions for 357 yards and three touchdowns. UFC champ Jon Jones agrees to anger management classes to resolve assault charge

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones has agreed to attend anger management classes to resolve a pair of misdemeanor charges stemming from a drug test at his home in which he was accused of being hostile. A bench trial had been set to begin Tuesday before a New Mexico judge. But attorneys announced at the start of the virtual proceeding that an agreement had been reached. The case will be dismissed as along as Jones completes four hours of anger management classes and follows all laws over the next 90 days. NEW YORK (AP) — Shohei Ohtani was 0 for 3 with a walk and a hit-by-pithc, remaining in the lineup after dislocating a shoulder as the Los Angeles Dodgers took a 3-0 World Series lead over the New York Yankees with a 4-2 victory. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton had a short retort for the Carolina Panthers players who were complaining about Denver’s fake field goal and trick pass in the fourth quarter of a blowout Sunday. He said play better. And that’s the same two-word message he had for his own team after they committed two turnovers that led to both of the Panthers’ touchdowns. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed one hit over 6 1/3 innings, Freddie Freeman homered for the second straight night and the Los Angeles Dodgers hit three early longballs off Carlos Rodón to beat the New York Yankees 4-2 for a 2-0 lead in the World Series. Tommy Edman and Teoscar Hernández also went deep for the Dodgers, who watched star slugger Shohei Ohtani walk off the field with a partially dislocated left shoulder at the end of the seventh inning. DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — No. 22 SMU forced an incompletion on a winning two-point conversion attempt to seal a 28-27 road victory in overtime against Duke. It’s the fifth consecutive win for SMU, which got 117 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including the winner in overtime, from Brashard Smith. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Omarion Hampton ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns, and J.J. Jones caught five passes for 129 yards and a pair of scores as North Carolina snapped a four-game losing streak with a 41-14 win over Virginia. The Tar Heel buried a month’s worth of frustration by dominating the second and third quarters to end their longest losing streak since 2018. Virginia endured a dismal offensive day, not scoring a touchdown until backup quarterback Tony Muskett connected with JR Wilson for a 68-yard score with 10:07 left and the outcome no longer in doubt. NC State’s Grayson McCall gives up football, says he can’t come back from latest head injury

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State quarterback Grayson McCall has announced his retirement from football less than three weeks after a vicious hit knocked him out of a game for the second time this season. McCall was a sixth-year player who was a graduate transfer following five seasons at Coastal Carolina, where he threw for more than 10,000 yards and 88 touchdowns, but also had concussion issues. Panthers QB Bryce Young will start against Broncos after Andy Dalton sprains thumb in car crash

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Bryce Young will start Sunday at quarterback for the Carolina Panthers against the Denver Broncos after Andy Dalton sprained the thumb on his right throwing hand during a car crash in Charlotte. Panthers coach Dave Canales made the announcement Wednesday after practice. Dalton did not practice. Canales said there were no serious injuries in Tuesday’s crash, and the 36-year-old Dalton will be listed as day to day. Canales said it’s possible that Dalton could be the team’s No. 2 quarterback on Sunday. Young was benched two games into the season after starting 0-2. Fernando Valenzuela, Mexican-born pitcher whose feats for Dodgers fueled ‘Fernandomania,’ dies at 63

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Fernando Valenzuela, the Los Angeles Dodgers pitching ace who inspired “Fernandomania” in the early 1980s, has died. He was 63. The Mexican-born phenom won the National League Cy Young Award and Rookie of the Year in 1981, when he helped the Dodgers win the World Series. His death comes as the Dodgers are preparing to open the World Series on Friday night at home against the New York Yankees. Valenzuela had left his job on the Dodgers’ Spanish-language television broadcast in September without explanation. He was reported to have been hospitalized earlier this month.
