North Carolina Courage defeats San Diego Wave 4-1 in Alex Morgan’s final professional soccer match

Defender Malia Berkely had three assists as the North Carolina Courage earned a 3-1 road win against the San Diego Wave on Sunday evening in the National Women’s Soccer League. The match marked Alex Morgan’s final professional soccer match, as the forward announced her retirement earlier this week. More than 26,000 fans came to Snapdragon Stadium to honor the longtime U.S. women’s national team forward. In other NWSL action, Esther González scored in the 93rd minute to give Gotham a 2-1 home win over the Houston Dash. Yazmeen Ryan opened the scoring for Gotham, with Diana Ordóñez heading in Houston’s lone goal. Start of the Dave Canales era couldn’t have gone much worse after Panthers routed 47-10 in opener

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Dave Canales era couldn’t have gotten off to a worse start in Carolina following a 47-10 loss to the New Orleans Saints, leaving real concerns about the future of quarterback Bryce Young. Canales was hired to fix Young, but the second-year QB had an abysmal start to the season, throwing an interception on his first pass and finishing the game 13 of 30 for 161 yards with two picks for a career-worst 32.3 quarterback rating. That leaves the 2023 No. 1 draft pick with more career interceptions than touchdown passes during his 17 NFL starts. Canales had success working with Geno Smith in Seattle and Baker Mayfield in Tampa Bay, but it’s uncertain if he will be able to turn Young around. Panthers’ offseason changes yield another dismal outing as Bryce Young struggles again

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Carolina Panthers made major changes after going 2-15 last season. In their 2024 opener, they looked even worse. Carolina was overmatched on both sides of the ball in a 47-10 loss at New Orleans on Sunday. Bryce Young struggled much like he did as a rookie, going 13 of 30 for 161 yards with a rating of 32.8. And the Panthers’ defense allowed the Saints to score on their first nine possessions. It’s the first time this century that’s happened in a season opener. Joey Logano wins NASCAR playoff opener at Atlanta to advance to 2nd round

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) — Joey Logano raced his way into the second round of NASCAR’s playoffs by winning the opener in overtime at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Logano is the only two-time Cup Series champion in the 16-driver playoff field. He earned an automatic berth into the next round of races. His victory came in the 11th race of this season to end in overtime — a tie for the record set in the 2017 season. Ryan Blaney finished second in a 1-2 sweep for Team Penske and Ford. Derek Carr and the Saints rout the Panthers 47-10 in Klint Kubiak’s play-calling debut

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Derek Carr passed for three touchdowns and the New Orleans Saints scored on their first nine possessions in a 47-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers. Alvin Kamara and Jamaal Williams each ran for touchdowns and Blake Grupe kicked four field goals in an extraordinary debut for new Saints offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. The season opener could not have gone much worse for new Carolina coach Dave Canales. Second-year quarterback Bryce Young was 13 of 30 passing for 161 yards, was intercepted twice and sacked four times. Nico Iamaleava combines for 276 yards and 3 TDs as No. 14 Tennessee routs No. 24 NC State 51-10

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Quarterback Nico Iamaleava combined for 276 yards and three touchdowns, former walk-on safety Will Brooks had a momentum-turning 85-yard interception return for a score and No. 14 Tennessee trounced No. 24 North Carolina State 51-10 on Saturday night in the Duke’s Mayo Classic. Iamaleava threw touchdown passes to Miles Kitselman and Holden Staes and ran for a 31-yard score as the Vols scored on eight of their 11 possessions with the redshirt freshman under center. Dylan Sampson ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns as unbeaten Tennessee outgained NC State, 460-143. Harrell leads North Carolina past Charlotte 38-20 in new role

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina quarterback Conner Harrell threw for two touchdowns and ran for a score after moving into the starting role as the Tar Heels beat Charlotte 38-20. Harrell was 16-for-25 for 219 yards and an interception. The third-year sophomore was in his second career start, moving up to first string after Max Johnson’s season-ending leg injury in the opener at Minnesota. North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton, a preseason All-American, gained 77 yards on 11 first-half carries, but he didn’t play in the second half. Michael Jordan’s NASCAR team skips the deadline to sign a new revenue model with racing series

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) — 23XI Racing says it skipped a deadline to sign a new charter agreement with NASCAR because “it did not have an opportunity to fairly bargain” for a new contract. The two-car team owned by Jordan, active driver Denny Hamlin and Jordan right-hand man Curtis Polk revealed that teams had a Friday night NASCAR-imposed deadline to sign new charter agreements that run from 2025 through 2031. In a letter to NASCAR, 23XI said it was refusing to sign the extension. Alex Morgan retires from professional soccer and is expecting her second child

Two-time Women’s World Cup champion Alex Morgan has announced she is pregnant with her second child and is retiring from professional soccer. The 35-year-old Morgan will play her final match with her club team, the San Diego Wave of the National Women’s Soccer League, on Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium. In addition to World Cup titles in 2015 and 2019, Morgan also won a gold medal with the United States at the 2012 London Olympics. She first joined the national team in 2009.… Continue Reading

Panthers new head coach Dave Canales wants the ball out of QB Bryce Young’s hands quickly in Year 2

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Just 2.7 seconds. First-year Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales has been harping on Bryce Young to get the ball out of his hands or making the decision to scramble within that time frame throughout the offseason. It’s something that will require quick decision-making skills from the second-year quarterback. Canales believes it will play to Young’s strengths and help him turn the corner after a disappointing rookie season in which he went 2-14 as a starter, threw for fewer than 180 yards per game and was sacked 62 times.
