Codrington’s big returns and Seibert’s 4 field goals help Jets defeat Panthers 15-12

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Rookie Brandon Codrington returned a kickoff 63 yards and a punt 31 yards to set up scores and the New York Jets beat the Carolina Panthers 15-12 in a game in which both teams rested almost all of their starters and several key reserves. Austin Seibert kicked four field goals, including a 52 yarder, and Greg Zuerlein added another for the Jets. The Jets’ Aaron Rodgers and Panthers’ Bryce Young sat out after both received extensive snaps during a joint practice Thursday. Justin Allgaier wins NASCAR Xfinity Series race, pulling away from the pack in overtime at Michigan

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — Justin Allgaier raced to his second NASCAR Xfinity Series victory of the year and the 25th of his career, pulling away from the pack in an overtime finish Saturday at Michigan International Speedway. The wet weather that washed out qualifying for the Cup Series, stopped the Xfinity event for nearly 10 minutes early and again toward the end of a race scheduled for 125 laps that went an extra three laps. On the final restart, Allgaier broke free in the No. 7 Chevrolet before Kyle Sieg rolled over in a crash on the final lap to end the race. Sieg was able to get out of the car on his own. Sun Belt Preview: Appalachian State, Texas State picked as favorites as season arrives

Appalachian State is using a strong finish to bolster its chances at another special season in the Sun Belt Conference. The Mountaineers finished last year with six victories in their last seven games and were picked to win the league’s East Division and play for a conference title this fall. Texas State was selected as favorites to win the West over two-time defending champion Troy. Panthers wide receiver Diontae Johnson relishing return to role as top option with new team

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Diontae Johnson is relishing the prospect of being a No. 1 wide receiver again. When Johnson was acquired by the Panthers in an offseason trade from the Pittsburgh Steelers, he was informed by new head coach Dave Canales that he’d be the primary option in Carolina’s passing game. Johnson is familiar with that role. Matt Kuchar finishes Wyndham Championship a day late in odd decision meant to help a rookie

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Matt Kuchar says he feels bad for those who had to come back Monday morning for him to finish the Wyndham Championship. But he says there was a reason why he chose not to finish in darkness. He says he wanted to set an example for rookie Max Greyserman that he could stop if he wanted. The only problem is Kuchar didn’t realize Aaron Rai in the group ahead had finished with a birdie. That means Greyserman was two shots behind and unlikely to win. Jordan Chiles medal inquiry: USA Gymnastics says arbitration panel won’t reconsider decision

USA Gymnastics officials say an arbitration panel won’t reconsider a decision asking gymnast Jordan Chiles to return the bronze medal she was awarded in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics. USA Gymnastics says it will continue efforts to let Chiles keep the medal. CAS voided an on-floor appeal from Chiles’ coach that vaulted her to third, saying the appeal came 4 seconds beyond the one-minute time limit for scoring inquiries. USA Gymnastics disputed the timing, saying in a statement Sunday that the agency submitted video evidence to CAS that showed Team USA coach Cecile Landi first appealed 13 seconds before the deadline.… Continue Reading

Aaron Rai takes advantage of Max Greyserman’s late meltdown to win the Wyndham Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Aaron Rai took advantage of Max Greyserman’s late meltdown to win the Wyndham Championship on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title. Rai closed with a 6-under 64, with the Englishman making a 6 1/2-foot birdie putt on the 18th to post at 18-under 262 in the regular-season finale at Sedgefield. Greyserman shot 69 to finish two strokes back on a day when everyone played at least 36 holes. Rai was four strokes back after Greyserman holed out for eagle on the par-4 13th, then had a share of the lead a hole later when Greyserman drove out-of-bounds and made a quadruple bogey on 14. Anson Dorrance retires as North Carolina women’s soccer coach after NCAA-record 21 national titles

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Anson Dorrance, whose 21 NCAA championships are the most by a head coach in any Division I sport in college history, is retiring after 45 seasons directing the women’s soccer program at North Carolina. The Tar Heels said Dorrance informed athletic director Bubba Cunningham of his plans Friday and told the team Sunday, four days before their season opener at Denver. Dorrance also overlapped as both the men’s and women’s coaches early in his career but his greatest success was with the women. Plane carrying Panthers players, coaches and staff gets stuck in the mud after landing in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers players, coaches and staff members were unharmed after their Delta Airlines flight veered off the taxiway and got stuck in the mud while making its way to the gate at Charlotte Douglas International Airport Friday morning. The team was returning from a 17-3 preseason loss at New England and arrived safely around 2:35 a.m. on the runway. But as the plane was making its way to the terminal it got stuck in the mud and couldn’t move, forcing passengers to have to deplane via stairs and be transported to the terminal. COVID-stricken Noah Lyles finishes 3rd in 200 meters won by Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo

SAINT-DENIS, France (AP) — Noah Lyles lost the Olympic 200 meters, falling to Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, then being tended to by medics who carted him off the track in a wheelchair. Later, wearing a mask as he spoke with reporters, Lyles said he had COVID. After crossing the line third, Lyles fell to his back and writhed around in pain, staying down for nearly 30 seconds before getting up, asking for water and getting to the wheelchair. It’s the second straight Olympics the virus has played a major role in Lyles’ trip to the Games. He also won the bronze in the Tokyo Olympics.… Continue Reading
