Dick Moss, the lawyer who won free agency for baseball players, dies at age 93

NEW YORK (AP) — Dick Moss, the lawyer who won the arbitration case that created free agency for baseball players, has died. He was 93. The Major League Baseball Players Association says Moss died Saturday at an assisted-living residence in Santa Monica, California. Moss was hired by union executive director Marvin Miller as general counsel in 1967. He argued the 1975 case involving pitchers Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally that led to an arbitrator striking down the reserve clause, which had enabled teams to control players. The decision led to collectively bargained provisions for baseball free agency. Baseball players’ gains were followed closely by other sports.… Continue Reading

It was Clemson’s 800th victory in program history, the first ACC team to reach that mark.… Continue Reading

Want to burn calories? Climbing stairs might be the most effective exercise for you

TOKYO (AP) — If you’re trying to lose a bit of weight and want a new way to do it, stair-climbing as a regular exercise — or just adding a few flights a day — might be for you. It’s accessible, and research shows it’s more effective than walking on level ground. You burn about 20 times more calories going up stairs than walking on flat ground. Even going down stairs you burn roughly five times more, the muscles being stretched to slow the body’s descent.… Continue Reading

Panthers QB Bryce Young says he was surprised to learn he’d been benched, needs to get better

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young says he was surprised to learn from head coach Dave Canales that he had been benched and accepted blame for the team’s struggles on the field. He says the news was not something he was expecting but added that he has respect for Canales and the organization. Young is 2-16 as an NFL starter since he arrived in Carolina amid high expectations after being selected No. 1 overall in the 2023 draft. The Panthers are 0-2 and have not been competitive in either game this season. They have been outscored 73-13. Andy Dalton will start Sunday at Las Vegas.… Continue Reading

Coach Dave Canales says Panthers aren’t considering trading QB Young after benching 2023 No. 1 pick

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers coach Dave Canales said he “absolutely” believes Bryce Young can still be a franchise quarterback, adding that the team has no plans to trade the 2023 No. 1 overall pick after benching him earlier this week. Canales said he believes the Panthers have a great situation at quarterback. Andy Dalton will start Sunday’s Week 3 game at Las Vegas. The 36-year-old journeyman quarterback walked out to the practice field on Wednesday with a big smile on his face, stopping along the way to sign a football for a fan. He took all of the first-team reps while Young was relegated to running the scout team.… Continue Reading

ACC eyes revenue distribution models that could quell disputes with FSU, Clemson, AP sources say

Atlantic Coast Conference leaders are discussing new ways of divvying up media rights revenue that could potentially resolve legal disputes with Florida State and Clemson. That’s according to two people familiar with the league’s internal talks who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because there is no fully formed proposal and a resolution is far from imminent. The discussions internally and with Florida State are an extension of a court-ordered mediation session last month between the conference and the school. FSU’s board of trustees sued the ACC in December, looking for an affordable potential way out of the conference.… Continue Reading

Dave Canales’ decision to bench Bryce Young raises questions about No. 1 pick’s future in Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Dave Canales’ decision to bench Bryce Young raises serious questions about the 2023 No. 1 overall pick’s future with the Carolina Panthers. Canales made the move on Monday, less than 24 hours after saying in his postgame news conference that Young would remain the team’s starter despite another dreadful performance in a 26-3 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Canales said he changed his mind after watching video Sunday night and consulting with the front office. There is no indication that this is a temporary move. That means the Panthers could be looking to draft a quarterback in the first round again next year.… Continue Reading
