Former New England Patriots coach and six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick says he had “a couple of good conversations” with North Carolina Chancellor Lee Roberts amid his discussions about the Tar Heels’ head-coaching job. Belichick appeared on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” on Monday. He said he had spent the 11 months since his departure from the Patriots taking a “longer look” at the college level. Barkley’s brilliance helps Eagles beat Panthers 22-16 but pass game has Philly frustrated

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Saquon Barkley rushed for 124 yards to break the Eagles season record, Jalen Hurts threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score, and Philadelphia won its ninth straight game, 22-16 over the Carolina Panthers. The Eagles maintained their position as the No. 2 team in the NFC behind Detroit after a mostly lethargic effort against the Panthers. Barkley added another milestone in his MVP push when he used a 9-yard run in the fourth quarter to surpass LeSean McCoy’s Eagles record of 1,607 yards, set in 2013. No. 18 Clemson beats No. 8 SMU 34-31 on last-second field goal for ACC title, berth in the CFP

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Cade Klubnik threw for 262 yards and four touchdowns, Nolan Hauser kicked 56-yard field goal as time expired and the No. 18 Clemson beat No. 8 SMU 34-31 on Saturday night in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship to earn a spot in the College Football Playoff and position itself for a first-round bye. Bryant Wesco had eight catches for 143 yards and two first-quarter touchdowns for the Tigers, who needed a win to get into the expanded 12-team playoffs. Jake Briningstool added two short TD receptions as Clemson improved to 9-1 in ACC championship games under coach Dabo Swinney. Trimble helps No. 20 North Carolina top Georgia Tech, 68-65

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Seth Trimble scored 19 points and No. 20 North Carolina held off upset-minded Georgia Tech for a 68-65 victory in the ACC opener for both teams Saturday. Trimble was 5 for 6 from the field and 8 for 9 on free throws for the Tar Heels (5-4, 1-0 ACC). RJ Davis added 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Ian Jackson chipped in 15 points off the bench. Lance Terry scored 22 points for Georgia Tech (4-5, 0-1). Baye Ndongo had 19 points and 12 rebounds. UNC played without graduate transfer Ty Claude, who spent last season at Georgia Tech, because of an injury to his right eye.… Continue Reading

No. 10 Alabama beats No. 20 North Carolina 94-79 in the ACC-SEC Challenge

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Mark Sears scored 20 points, Aden Holloway and Labaron Philon each had 15 points and No. 10 Alabama beat No. 20 North Carolina 94-79 on Wednesday night in the ACC-SEC Challenge. Clifford Omoruyi and Derrion Reid each scored 11 points and Grant Nelson had 10 points to help the Crimson Tide (6-2) beat three straight Top 25 opponents for the first time in three seasons. The rematch of Alabama’s Sweet 16 victory last season wasn’t close. Freshman Ian Jackson scored a season-high 23 points, RJ Davis had 18 and Seth Trimble added 12 points for the Tar Heels (4-4). Sumo wrestlers bring 1,500 years of tradition to London as the sport has an international moment

LONDON (AP) — London’s Royal Albert Hall is preparing to host a different kind of spectacle: Sumo wrestling. Wrestlers put on an exhibition of heavyweight grappling to promote a tournament scheduled for next October. It marks only the second time an elite five-day tournament will be held outside Japan. The first was held in 1991 at the same venue. Panthers 2nd-year QB Bryce Young suffers another loss, but continues to show late-game production

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Bryce Young is beginning to show signs that he can perform in the clutch. Now the Carolina Panthers just have to figure out how to win close games. Young capped a 60-yard touchdown drive Sunday with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Adam Thielen to briefly give the Panthers a 23-20 lead with 30 seconds left against Tampa Bay. And Young was in the process of engineering a potential winning score in overtime when Chuba Hubbard fumbled at the Bucs 29. The Panthers lost 26-23. ACC fines NC State, North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech for rivalry week scuffles

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The ACC has fined N.C. State, North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech for scuffles during their rivalry games. The league announced the penalties Monday, although it did not disclose the amount of the fines. It said the amounts would be the maximum allowed by league bylaws. The Wolfpack and Tar Heels battled after N.C. State’s 35-30 win when Wolfpack players attempted to plant a team flag on the Tar Heels field. The Cavaliers and Hokies mixed it up during pregame warmups before Virginia Tech’s 37-17 win. The scuffles were among many that broke out during college football’s rivalry week.… Continue Reading

McLaughlin’s field goal in OT helps Bucs beat Panthers 26-23, move into 1st-place tie in NFC South

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Chase McLaughlin kicked a 30-yard field goal in overtime, Baker Mayfield overcame an ankle injury to lead four scoring drives in the fourth quarter and the extra period, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Carolina Panthers 26-23. Tampa Bay moved into a tie for first place in the NFC South with Atlanta. Bucky Irving ran for a career-high 152 yards and a touchdown for the Bucs. Mayfield finished 21 of 33 for 235 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, and Mike Evans had 118 yards receiving. College football players scuffle after flags come out following rivalry wins

It was flag day in college football. Michigan, North Carolina State and Florida celebrated road wins by displaying flags on the logos in the middle of their rivals’ stadiums. Arizona State put its own twist on the day with a trident. The results were predictable. Michigan scuffled with Ohio State after a group of Wolverines attempted to plant their flag in the middle of Ohio Stadium. There was a similar scene in North Carolina after at least one N.C. State player tried to plant a Wolfpack flag on UNC’s home field. And another skirmish in Florida after Gators edge rusher George Gumbs Jr. planted a flag on Florida State’s logo.… Continue Reading
