Andy Dalton’s success in win over the Raiders increases concern about Bryce Young

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers’ stunning 36-22 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders showed that coach Dave Canales was correct when he said Andy Dalton gives his team the best chance to win. At the same time it increases concern about Bryce Young’s ability right now to lead the team and raises even more questions about his chances of being a franchise quarterback. Dalton did all the things the ineffective Young hasn’t been able to do for most of his brief NFL career: force defenses to respect the passing game, move the Panthers down the field and score points. UNC’s Mack Brown ‘disappointed in me’ after locker-room comments following James Madison loss

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina’s Mack Brown says he is “disappointed in me” for making emotional postgame locker-room comments after giving up 70 points in a shocking home loss to James Madison. That included Brown floating whether he should stay on as coach. The Tar Heels lost 70-50 at home Saturday to the Dukes from the Sun Belt Conference. The 70 points tied the record for the most points ever allowed by UNC in any game. Brown said he asked players if they felt good in his leadership afterward. Stray puppy that brought Hamlin bad luck gets to stay after driver advances in NASCAR playoffs

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The dog can stay, at least for another round of NASCAR’s playoffs. The future of little Lulu, the stray puppy Denny Hamlin’s daughters found under the Gateway Arch in St. Louis in June, has been in doubt ever since Hamlin decided the addition to his household had derailed his season. Hamlin’s statistics had plummeted since the girls added Lulu to the household and as he headed into Bristol Motor Speedway facing playoff elimination, he joked the dog had to go. White Sox lose 120th game to tie post-1900 record by the 1962 expansion New York Mets

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox tied the post-1900 record of 120 losses by the 1962 expansion New York Mets when the San Diego Padres won 4-2 by rallying for three runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by Fernando Tatis Jr.’s towering home run. The White Sox had taken a 2-1 lead on home runs by Korey Lee and Miguel Vargas off Yu Darvish, but that lead quickly disappeared in the eighth. This defeat came a day after the White Sox tied the American League record of 119 losses set by the 2003 Detroit Tigers. Andy Dalton passes for 319 yards and 3 TDs to lead Panthers past Raiders 36-22 for first win

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Andy Dalton gave the Panthers the quarterback play they’ve been sorely lacking, throwing for 319 yards and three touchdowns to lead Carolina past the Las Vegas Raiders 36-22. Promoted to the starting job in place of the ineffective Bryce Young, Dalton guided the Panthers to their first win and moved to 4-0 lifetime against the Raiders. Carolina is 3-17 going back to last season. The Panthers were blown out the first two weeks this year, prompting coach Dave Canales to bench Young. Dick Moss, the lawyer who won free agency for baseball players, dies at age 93

NEW YORK (AP) — Dick Moss, the lawyer who won the arbitration case that created free agency for baseball players, has died. He was 93. The Major League Baseball Players Association says Moss died Saturday at an assisted-living residence in Santa Monica, California. Moss was hired by union executive director Marvin Miller as general counsel in 1967. He argued the 1975 case involving pitchers Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally that led to an arbitrator striking down the reserve clause, which had enabled teams to control players. North Carolina coach Mack Brown says ’embarrasing’ 70-50 loss to James Madison is his fault

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Alonza Barnett III’s five touchdown passes led a quick-strike offense that helped James Madison beat North Carolina 70-50 on Saturday for a signature road win under first-year coach Bob Chesney. Barnett threw for 388 yards with no interceptions while also running for 99 yards and two scores for the Dukes. James Madison had TDs on offense, defense and special teams in its first victory over North Carolina in four meetings. Klubnik, No. 21 Clemson beat NC State 59-35 in Atlantic Coast Conference opener

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Cade Klubnik threw for three touchdowns and added a 55-yard scoring run as No. 21 Clemson continued its offensive revival with a 59-35 victory over NC State to start Atlantic Coast Conference play Saturday. Klubnik and the Tigers scored eight first-half touchdowns in a 66-20 victory over Appalachian State two weeks ago. This time, Clemson had six first-half TDs and led the Wolfpack 45-7 by halftime. Journalist Ron Green dies at 95. He spent six decades as an award-winning sports writer in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Longtime Charlotte Observer columnist Ron Green has died. He was 95. Green’s career spanned six decades in North Carolina. He covered 60 consecutive Masters, 25 Super Bowls and countless college and professional football and basketball games. His favorite memory was Jim Valvano and N.C. State winning the 1983 NCAA title. His son Ron Green Jr. announced the death on Facebook. Green is a member of North Carolina Journalism Hall of Fame and the North Carolina Sports Hall. He is a past winner of the PGA of America Lifetime Journalism Award and the Memorial Golf Journalism Award.… Continue Reading
