Bubba Wallace confident he and team can have success at Darlington to make NASCAR playoffs

DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) — Bubba Wallace believes he can have success at Darlington this weekend and make the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs for a second straight season. Wallace currently sits one spot out of NASCAR’s postseason on the playoff grid. He’s 21 points behind Chris Buescher and says his best way in is to win the Southern 500 on Sunday night. Wallace had the last spot going into the final regular-season race a year ago and made it through to compete for a championship. North Carolina ekes out 19-17 win on Minnesota’s missed FG as time expires; Heels QB Johnson injured

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Noah Burnette made four field goals and hit the go-ahead 45-yarder with 1:44 left to lift North Carolina past Minnesota 19-17. Three of Burnette’s kicks came after quarterback Max Johnson was carted off with a leg injury. Dragan Kesich missed his chance to win it for the Gophers as time expired when his 47-yard try went wide right. Preseason All-American Omarion Hampton rushed 30 times for 129 yards and Jahvaree Ritzie had three sacks for the Tar Heels. Concepcion, Waters help No. 24 NC State push past FCS foe Western Carolina 38-21 to open season

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Kevin Concepcion slithered free from contact and broke loose to the right for a 35-yard catch-and-run touchdown to help No. 24 N.C. State finally push ahead for good and beat Western Carolina 38-21 in Thursday’s opener. That was Concepcion’s third touchdown of the night. He was the highlight in a tough win for the Wolfpack against a Championship Subdivision team ranked 19th in the FCS coaches poll. Jordan Waters had two fourth-quarter TDs as N.C. Panthers use No. 1 slot on waiver wire to acquire 6 players one day after NFL roster cuts

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Panthers are taking full advantage of their No. 1 position on the NFL waiver wire. Carolina claimed six players one day after NFL teams were required to trim their roster to 53 players. No. 24 NC State opens against FCS foe Western Carolina with eye on looming Tennessee matchup

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — No. 24 N.C. State opens the season Thursday against Western Carolina of the Championship Subdivision. That game will mark coach Dave Doeren’s first look at a reconfigured depth chart bolstered through the transfer portal. That also comes with a looming date against No. 15 Tennessee following in Week 2. The Wolfpack’s additions include a new starting quarterback in Grayson McCall from Coastal Carolina. NASCAR makes another bold schedule move by adding Mexico City to 2025 Cup Series calendar

NASCAR has been clear for more than two years that its next big project would be international expansion. It will come to fruition in 2025 when the Cup Series races in Mexico City for the first points-paying international race in modern history. The June 15 race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez will be the first time since 1958 and only third time in 77 years that NASCAR’s top series will run an event that counts in the championship outside the United States. FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Three people familiar with the deal say All-Pro wide receiver CeeDee Lamb has ended his holdout with the Dallas Cowboys by agreeing to a $136 million, four-year contract. Lamb is going into the last year of his rookie contract after being drafted 17th overall in 2020. BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen became the first player in major league history to appear in the same game for both teams when he took the field for Boston in the resumption of a rain-delayed game he started for Toronto back in June. Jansen was in the Blue Jays lineup at catcher and batting in the second inning on June 26 when the game was suspended. (AP) — Quarterback Bryce Young displayed having a good grasp of the Panthers’ new offensive playbook by capping a short and successful preseason debut with an opening-drive touchdown in Carolina’s 31-26 win over the Buffalo Bills.
