Greg Biffle wins Myers Brothers Award for humanitarian aid relief efforts following Hurricane Helene

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle has been named the recipient of the National Motorsports Press Association’s Myers Brothers Award for his humanitarian aid efforts earlier this summer in the wake of Hurricane Helene. Before most of the country knew the devastation the hurricane dealt Western North Carolina and East Tennessee, Biffle had already boarded his personal helicopter, delivering aid to the flooded, remote region that was cut off from the rest of the world. Biffle’s unselfish efforts as part of Operation Helidrop spearheaded NASCAR’s mobilization to help those who desperately needed food, water, medicine, clothing and housing.… Continue Reading

Penn State wins trademark case over retailer’s use of vintage logos, images

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Penn State has won a closely watched trademark fight over an online retailer’s use of its vintage logos and images. A Pennsylvania jury awarded Penn State $28,000 in damages earlier this week over products made and sold by the firms Vintage Brand and Sportswear Inc. Penn State accused them of selling “counterfeit” clothing and accessories. The defendants said their website makes clear they are not affiliated with Penn State. At least a dozen other schools have sued the defendants on similar grounds, but the Pennsylvania case was the first to go to trial.… Continue Reading

Maui Invitational returns to a Lahaina still grappling with raw emotions left by deadly wildfire

HONOLULU (AP) — Residents of the Hawaii town devastated by last year’s wildfire are awaiting the return of one of the nation’s most prestigious basketball tournaments with mixed feelings. Fans are excited about the Maui Invitational bringing high-caliber competition to Lahaina. And they welcome the economic boost Lahaina will get from the thousands of travelers eating in restaurants and staying in hotels. But there’s also a fear that travelers might show disrespect by wandering into the burn zone and taking photos of the devastation. And there is worry tourists might trigger unpleasant memories with questions about that catastrophic day. Residents say feelings are still raw.… Continue Reading

Bela Karolyi, coach of Olympic champion gymnasts who was criticized after Nassar scandal, dies at 82

Bela Karolyi, the charismatic if polarizing gymnastics coach who turned young women into champions and the United States into an international power, has died. He was 82. USA Gymnastics confirmed Karolyi died Friday. No cause of death was given. Karolyi and wife Martha trained multiple Olympic gold medalists and world champions in the U.S. and Romania, including Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton. Comaneci called Karolyi “a big impact and influence” on her life. Karolyi came under fire at times for his methods and several former gymnasts blamed the Karolyis for their role in the Larry Nassar scandal, saying the culture they helped create allowed Nassar’s abusive behavior to run unchecked for years.… Continue Reading

Jon Jones sends Stipe Miocic into retirement with decisive UFC heavyweight win in front of Trump

Jones posed and played to the crowd on top of the octagon in front of Trump, Elon Musk and Robert Kennedy Jr. Trump walked out to a rousing ovation just before the start of the pay-per-view card and seemed to bask in thrill of the fighters that throughout the night gave him props.… Continue Reading

Jake Paul, 27, beats 58-year-old Mike Tyson as the hits don’t match the hype

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jake Paul won a unanimous decision over Mike Tyson as the hits didn’t match the hype in a fight between a young YouTuber-turned-boxer and the 58-year-old former heavyweight champion. All the hate from the pre-fight buildup was gone, with Paul even stopping to pay homage with a bow to Tyson before the final bell sounded at the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. The fight wasn’t close on the judge’s cards, with one giving Paul an 80-72 edge and the other two calling it 79-73. Tyson came after Paul immediately after the opening bell and landed a couple of quick punches but didn’t try much else the rest of the way.… Continue Reading

Bryce Young beginning to show signs of confidence, growth in leading Panthers to back-to-back wins

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — After he broke the pocket and weaved his way up the field for a 24-yard gain, Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young briefly posed as he signaled for a first down in a rare display of confidence for the second-year quarterback. Young wasn’t great on Sunday, completing 15 of 25 passes for 126 yards with one touchdown, but he played mostly mistake-free while leading the Panthers to a 20-17 win over the New York Giants in Germany. While coach Dave Canales wouldn’t say who’ll start on Nov. 24 when the Panthers return from the bye week to host the two-time defending Super Bowl champion and unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs, but it would seem likely he’ll stick with Young.… Continue Reading
