Hunter Biden enters surprise guilty plea to avoid tax trial months after his gun conviction

LOS ANGELES (AP) — President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, has pleaded guilty to federal tax charges months after his conviction in a separate gun case. Hunter Biden said the surprise move was meant to spare his family another painful and embarrassing criminal trial after his gun case conviction three months ago. It came hours after jury selection was supposed to begin in the case accusing him of a scheme to avoid paying at least $1.4 million in taxes. Hunter Biden was already facing the prospect of potential prison time after his conviction in June on three felony gun charges. Most of Wall Street slips as S&P 500 stays on track for worst week since April

NEW YORK (AP) — Most U.S. stocks fell following a mixed round of data on the economy, keeping them on track for their worst week since April. The S&P 500 slipped 0.3% Thursday for a third straight drop, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.5%. The Nasdaq composite held up better than the rest of the market and rose 0.3% thanks to gains for Tesla and a handful of other Big Tech stocks. NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump is suggesting his plans to increase tariffs on foreign imports will solve seemingly unrelated challenges such as the rising cost of child care. Trump was asked Thursday about his plans to drive down costs of child care preventing women from rejoining the workforce. The GOP presidential nominee was speaking to a group of executives and industry leaders on how he plans to increase tariffs, slash regulations and cut government spending and corporate taxes. Wall Street extends losses as technology and energy stocks fall

NEW YORK (AP) – Stocks lost more ground on Wall Street, led by declines in the technology and energy sectors. The S&P 500 fell 0.2% Wednesday, following a 2.1% drop a day earlier. The Nasdaq composite dropped 0.3%. The Dow managed a gain of 38 points, or 0.1%. Job openings in the U.S. fell unexpectedly in July, a sign that hiring could cool in the coming months. Shares of U.S. Steel sank 17.5% after the Biden administration signaled it’s open to formally blocking the company’s acquisition by Nippon Steel of Japan. WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris has accepted the rules set forth for next week’s debate with former President Donald Trump, although the Democratic nominee says the decision not to keep both candidates’ microphones live throughout the matchup will be to her disadvantage. Harris’ campaign sent a letter Wednesday to host network ABC News accepting the parameters for the Sept. 10 presidential debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. The campaigns had feuded over the policy of muting microphones except for the candidate whose turn it is to speak. Boeing will fly its empty capsule back to Earth soon. Two NASA astronauts will stay behind

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Boeing will attempt to return its problem-plagued capsule from the International Space Station later this week — with empty seats. NASA said Wednesday that everything is on track for Boeing’s Starliner capsule to undock from the space station Friday evening. The fully automated craft will aim for a touchdown six hours later in New Mexico. The two astronauts who flew up on Starliner in June will remain behind at the space station and ride back with SpaceX next year. They should have stayed a week, but got stuck after Starliner encountered thruster failures and helium leaks. NASA judged the problems too risky for the test pilots.… Continue Reading

A 14-year-old student fatally shot 4 people in a rampage at a Georgia high school, officials say

WINDER, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a 14-year-old student has opened fire at a Georgia high school and killed four people, sending students scrambling for shelter as officers swarmed the campus and parents raced to find out if their children were safe. The dead have been identified as two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School in Winder. At least nine other people have been taken to hospitals with injuries. Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey says two school resource officers encountered the suspect within minutes and he immediately surrendered and was taken into custody. WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris has used a New Hampshire campaign stop to propose an expansion of tax incentives for small businesses. She presented a pro-entrepreneur plan that may soften her previous calls for wealthy Americans and large corporations to pay higher taxes. Harris wants to expand from $5,000 to $50,000 tax incentives for small business startup expenses, with the goal of eventually spurring 25 million new small business applications over four years. Global stocks tumble after Wall Street drops on worries about the economy

HONG KONG (AP) — Global stocks are tumbling after Wall Street had its worst day since early August, as a week full of economic updates got off to a weak start. Japan’s benchmark Nikkei lost over 4%. U.S. futures were lower. Rising oil supply is driving down prices. Libya is moving closer to resolving a conflict over control of the country’s oil revenue, which could increase its oil production soon.
