Hezbollah hit by a wave of exploding pagers in Lebanon and Syria. At least 9 dead, hundreds injured

BEIRUT (AP) — Hundreds of handheld pagers exploded near simultaneously in parts of Lebanon and Syria, killing at least nine people — including members of the militant group Hezbollah and a young girl. Officials in Lebanon say more than 2,700 were wounded on Tuesday, 200 critically. Hezbollah officials tell The Associated Press that the explosions affected a new brand of pagers used by the militant group. The explosions occurred in the suburbs of Beirut and in other areas that are Hezbollah strongholds. Hezbollah blamed the explosions on Israel. WASHINGTON (AP) — Presidential election campaigning is revving back up. Donald Trump heads on Tuesday to Michigan and Vice President Kamala Harris answers questions at a Black journalists forum in Pennsylvania. Their travels come as authorities continue to investigate a second apparent assassination attempt against Trump that’s roiled the race. Trump is holding a town hall in Flint, Michigan, and has appearances later in the week in New York, Washington and North Carolina. Harris will participate in a Philadelphia gathering of the National Association of Black Journalists. Facebook owner Meta bans Russia state media outlets over ‘foreign interference’

LONDON (AP) — Meta is banning Russia state media organization from its social media company platforms, alleging that the outlets used deceptive tactics to amplify Moscow’s propaganda. Meta owns Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. It said in a statement late Monday that it will roll out the ban over the next few days, in a fresh escalation of its efforts to counter Russia’s covert influence operations. Meta said it’s expanding its “ongoing enforcement against Russian state media outlets: Rossiya Segodnya, RT and other related entities, which are now banned from its apps globally for foreign interference activity.” The announcement drew a rebuke from the Kremlin on Tuesday.… Continue Reading

Pipeline explosion near Houston erupts in a towering flame, forcing evacuations

DEER PARK, Texas (AP) — A massive pipeline fire in suburban Houston has been shooting a towering flame into the air for hours. First responders evacuated a surrounding neighborhood where some homes have caught fire. Officials say the firefighters were dispatched at 9:55 a.m. on Monday in Deer Park and La Porte. A playground near the fire was damaged and firefighters poured water on homes near the blaze. The pipeline is operated by Dallas-based Energy Transfer. Suspect in apparent assassination attempt on Trump was near golf course for 12 hours, records show

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The man suspected in an apparent assassination attempt targeting former President Donald Trump camped outside a golf course with food and a rifle for nearly 12 hours before a Secret Service agent confronted him and opened fire. That’s according to court documents filed Monday. Ryan Wesley Routh, who is 58, faces charges of possessing a firearm despite a prior felony conviction and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number. Stock market today: Dow sets a record as Wall Street gears up for a cut to interest rates

NEW YORK (AP) — The Dow Jones Industrial Average set a record, as Wall Street geared up for the most anticipated meeting of the Federal Reserve in years. The Dow rose 228 points, or 0.6%, on Monday to surpass its prior all-time high set a few weeks ago. The S&P 500 index, which is much more comprehensive and widely followed on Wall Street, ticked up by 0.1% to climb within 0.6% of its own record set in July.
