A record 13 women will be governors next year after New Hampshire elected Kelly Ayotte

A record 13 women will be governors next year after New Hampshire elected Kelly Ayotte

A record 13 women will serve as governor next year after the election of New Hampshire Republican Kelly Ayotte, breaking the record set in 2023. Ayotte, a former U.S. senator, defeated the Democratic nominee Joyce Craig, former mayor of New Hampshire’s largest city. Experts say women holding top public offices normalizes their presence and opens the door for more women to seek executive positions. Eighteen states have never had a woman in the governor’s office. Kelly Dittmar of the Rutgers Center for American Women and Politics says 13 out of 50 is still underrepresentation for women.… Continue Reading

Engines on 1.4 million Honda vehicles might fail, so US regulators open an investigation

DETROIT (AP) — U.S. auto safety regulators are investigating complaints that engines can fail on as many as 1.4 million Honda and Acura vehicles. The probe by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration covers the 2016 through 2020 Honda Pilot and Acura MDX, as well as the 2018 through 2020 Honda Odyssey and Acura TLX. Also included is the 2017 through 2019 Honda Ridgeline. The agency says connecting rod bearings on vehicles with 3.5-liter V6 engines can fail, leading to complete engine failure. Honda recalled about 250,000 vehicles in 2023 to fix the same problem. But the agency says it has 173 complaints from owners who reported bearing failures, yet their vehicles weren’t included in the recall. A message was left Monday seeking comment from Honda.… Continue Reading

Trump pressures candidates for Senate GOP leader to fill his Cabinet right away

WASHINGTON (AP) — Days before Senate Republicans pick their new leader, President-elect Donald Trump is pressuring the candidates to change Senate rules and give him more power to appoint unconfirmed nominees. Republican Sens. John Thune of South Dakota, John Cornyn of Texas and Rick Scott of Florida are running in a secret ballot election on Wednesday to lead the conference as longtime GOP leader Mitch McConnell steps aside from power after almost two decades. Trump has not endorsed any of the candidates, but on Sunday he made clear that he expects the new leader to go around regular Senate order to allow him to fill his Cabinet quickly.… Continue Reading

Young Black and Latino men say they chose Trump because of the economy and jobs. Here’s how and why

Young Black and Latino men say they chose Trump because of the economy and jobs. Here’s how and why

WASHINGTON (AP) — Black and Latino voters moved toward Republican Donald Trump in this year’s presidential election, and some of the biggest shifts were among men under age 45, and that helped expand his margin over Democrat Kamala Harris. That’s according to AP VoteCast, a nationwide survey of more than 120,000 voters. The vice president’s losses with these groups largely became Trump’s gains as he locked down his traditionally older, white base and slightly expanded into a winning coalition. A combination of the economy and jobs was pinpointed as the issue voters felt was the most important problem the country faced. That was the case, too, for Black and Hispanic voters.… Continue Reading

FIFA and IOC hold different track records with Trump ahead of World Cup and Olympics in US

GENEVA (AP) — The two biggest events in world sports are coming to America. And if President-elect Donald Trump is not thinking about them yet, organizers of the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics certainly are. The World Cup and the Summer Games are rare globally shared cultural moments but there are questions around issues like granting visas and providing security that will cross Trump’s desk. And that requires diplomacy. Soccer body FIFA is in a better place to resume warm relations with Trump from his first administration compared to the International Olympic Committee, which had a difficult White House encounter in 2017.… Continue Reading

Haul out the holly! Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree arrives in New York City

Haul out the holly! Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree arrives in New York City

NEW YORK (AP) — The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree has arrived in New York City, signaling the start of the holiday season in the Big Apple. The 74-foot Norway spruce was driven into Manhattan’s Center Plaza and hoisted in place by a crane. It will take 5 miles of light strands with more than 50,000 multi-colored LED bulbs to wrap the tree. A Swarovski star crown sparkling with 3 million crystals will top it. The towering conifer was donated by a family in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts. It was cut down Thursday morning and loaded onto a flatbed truck for the 140-mile trip. The lighting ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 4.… Continue Reading

Stock market today: Wall Street cruises to more records as it closes its best week in a year

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks cruised to more records as they closed their best week in a year. The S&P 500 rose 0.4% Friday to cap its biggest weekly gain since early November 2023. It also briefly crossed above the 6,000 level for the first time. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.6%, while the Nasdaq composite added 0.1%. The relatively quiet trading followed huge gains earlier in the week after Donald Trump won the presidential election and the Federal Reserve cut interest rates again to make things easier for the economy. Long-term Treasury yields eased in the bond market.… Continue Reading

The story of how Trump went from diminished ex-president to a victor once again

The story of how Trump went from diminished ex-president to a victor once again

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — With his commanding victory over Kamala Harris, Donald Trump has achieved a stunning political comeback that seemed unimaginable after his refusal to accept his loss in the 2020 election ended with his supporters violently storming the Capitol. Trump, through sheer force of will, an enduring hold on his base and a campaign operation far savvier than past iterations, managed to turn his woes into fuel that channeled voters’ anger. He seized on widespread discontent over the direction of a country battered by years of high inflation. And he spoke to a new generation — using podcasts and social media — to tell those who felt forgotten that he shared their disdain for the status quo.… Continue Reading

President-elect Trump names Susie Wiles as chief of staff, first woman in the post

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has named Susie Wiles, the manager of his victorious campaign, as his White House chief of staff. She would be the first woman to hold the influential role. Wiles is widely credited within and outside Trump’s inner circle for running what was, by far, his most disciplined and well-executed campaign. She largely avoided the spotlight, even refusing to take the mic to speak as Trump celebrated his victory early Wednesday morning.… Continue Reading

Republican David McCormick flips pivotal Pennsylvania Senate seat, ousts Bob Casey

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Republican David McCormick has won Pennsylvania’s pivotal U.S. Senate seat, beating three-term Democratic Sen. Bob Casey. The victory pads Republicans’ majority in the Senate, which they wrested from Democratic control this week. The 59-year-old McCormick was CEO of the world’s largest hedge fund and served in former President George W. Bush’s administration. Casey is the son of a former two-term governor and Pennsylvania’s longest-serving Democrat in the Senate. McCormick attacked Casey as a do-nothing career politician. The Republican also benefited from tens of millions in campaign cash from billionaires and other Wall Street allies. It was McCormick’s second time running. He lost narrowly in 2022’s seven-way GOP primary.… Continue Reading
