FBI says it found 2,400 new JFK assassination records

FBI says it found 2,400 new JFK assassination records

DALLAS (AP) — The FBI says it’s discovered 2,400 records related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy as federal agencies work to comply with President Donald Trump’s executive order to release thousands of classified files. The FBI said Tuesday that it’s working to transfer the documents to the National Archives and Records Administration to be included in the declassification process. The federal government in the early 1990s mandated that all documents related to the Nov. 22, 1963, assassination in Dallas be housed in a single collection at the National Archives. The majority of the collection has been released. Researchers estimate that around 3,000 files are yet to be released, either in whole or in part.… Continue Reading

Most US kids aren’t gaining fast enough in reading and math. These schools are different

COMPTON, Calif. (AP) — The average American student remains half a grade level behind pre-pandemic levels of achievement in both reading and math. That’s according to the Education Recovery Scorecard, an analysis of state and national test scores by researchers at Harvard, Stanford and Dartmouth. The scorecard gives the most comprehensive picture of how American students are performing after the pandemic. It’s based on tests taken by students in Spring 2024. By then, the worst of the pandemic was long past, but schools were dealing still with a mental health crisis and high rates of absenteeism. In reading, especially, students are even further behind than they were in 2022, the analysis shows.… Continue Reading

Judge finds Trump administration hasn’t fully followed his order to unfreeze federal spending

Judge finds Trump administration hasn’t fully followed his order to unfreeze federal spending

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge has found the Trump administration hasn’t fully followed his order to unfreeze federal spending and has ordered the White House to release all money. U.S. District Court Judge John McConnell on Monday found there’s evidence that some federal grants and loans are still not going out to the recipients and ordered that the cash be released. McConnell earlier ordered a halt to Trump administration plans for a sweeping freeze federal funding. The Republican administration has said the pause was necessary to ensure federal spending fits with the president’s agenda. The order comes in a lawsuit filed by nearly two dozen states.… Continue Reading

Trump says he has directed US Treasury to stop minting new pennies, citing rising cost

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says he has directed the Treasury Department to stop minting new pennies, citing the rising cost of producing the one-cent coin. Trump wrote in a post Sunday night on his Truth Social site: “For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents. This is so wasteful!” He added: “I have instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies.” The move by Trump is the latest in what has been a rapid-fire effort by his new administration to enact sweeping change through executive order and proclamation.… Continue Reading

Trump says he is serious about Canada becoming 51st state in Super Bowl interview

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said he is serious about wanting Canada to become the 51st state in an interview that aired Sunday during the Super Bowl preshow. “Yeah it is,” Trump told Fox News Channel’s Bret Baier when asked whether his talk of annexing Canada is “a real thing” — as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently suggested. In the interview, Trump also said he has not seen enough action from Canada and Mexico to stave off the tariffs he has threatened to impose. “No, it’s not good enough,” he said of the United States’ two largest trading partners. “Something has to happen. It’s not sustainable. And I’m changing it.”… Continue Reading

Elon Musk dodges DOGE scrutiny while expanding his power in Washington

Elon Musk dodges DOGE scrutiny while expanding his power in Washington

WASHINGTON (AP) — Elon Musk has promised transparency as President Donald Trump’s leader in making the federal government more efficient. But it hasn’t worked out that way so far. Musk is used to doing things his own way as the world’s richest person, and he’s been avoiding public scrutiny of his work on Trump’s behalf. Staff members for his so-called Department of Government Efficiency have been showing up at various federal agencies to gain access to databases and systems without public explanation of their goals. The approach has disturbed Democrats and independent watchdogs. It’s a big challenge to the concepts of consensus and transparency that are foundational in a democratic system.… Continue Reading

Trump’s AI ambition and China’s DeepSeek overshadow an AI summit in Paris

Trump’s AI ambition and China’s DeepSeek overshadow an AI summit in Paris

PARIS (AP) — The geopolitics of artificial intelligence will be in focus at a major summit in France this week. World leaders, executives and experts will gather in Paris for the AI Action Summit to hammer out pledges on guiding the development of the rapidly advancing technology. It’s the latest in a series of global dialogues around AI governance. It comes at a fresh inflection point as China’s buzzy and budget-friendly DeepSeek chatbot shakes up the industry. U.S. Vice President JD Vance — making his first trip abroad since taking office — will attend. And China’s President Xi Jinping will be sending his special envoy, signaling high stakes for the meeting.… Continue Reading

Musk team’s access to student loan systems raises alarm over borrowers’ personal information

Musk team’s access to student loan systems raises alarm over borrowers’ personal information

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats are opposing Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency as it turns its attention to the Education Department, with lawmakers raising questions about DOGE’s access to internal systems containing personal information on tens of millions of Americans. A group of Democrats tells the acting education secretary it’s seeking to intervene as DOGE appears to gain increasing access to student loan databases. Democrats fear it could lay the groundwork for a takeover akin to Musk’s attempt to close the U.S. Agency for International Development. The Democrats want details about DOGE’s work and vow to fight any attempt to close the Education Department. The Republican president has set out to abolish the department.… Continue Reading

Stock market today: Wall Street finishes mixed as strong fashion, tobacco stocks offset Ford’s drop

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street drifted through a mixed day of trading as rising fashion and cigarette stocks worked against drops for Ford Motor and Qualcomm. The S&P 500 rose 0.4% Thursday following healthy gains for stock markets across much of Europe and Asia. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.3%, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.5%. Gains for Tapestry, Ralph Lauren and Philip Morris International pushed upward on indexes. Ford and Qualcomm fell even though both reported stronger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected. Treasury yields held relatively steady in the bond market ahead of Friday’s looming report on U.S. job growth.… Continue Reading

Trump blames ‘obsolete’ US air traffic control system for the plane and chopper collision near DC

Trump blames ‘obsolete’ US air traffic control system for the plane and chopper collision near DC

President Donald Trump says he thinks last week’s deadly collision between a passenger jet and Army helicopter wouldn’t have happened if the U.S. had a more modern air traffic control computer system. Trump said during an event at the Capitol building Thursday that “a lot of mistakes happened” on Jan. 29 when an American Airlines jet collided with an Army helicopter as it was about to land at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, D.C., killing all 67 people on board the two aircraft. He says the crash wouldn’t have happened if the country’s air traffic control computer system was newer, and that he plans to replace it.… Continue Reading
