...A RAPID CHANGE TO WINTRY WEATHER EXPECTED THIS EVENING THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT...

 

A POWERFUL STORM SYSTEM WILL MOVE ACROSS THE CAROLINAS THROUGH TONIGHT. RAIN IS EXPECTED TO CHANGE QUICKLY TO SNOW THIS EVENING... AND CONTINUE INTO THE NIGHT BEFORE ENDING LATE TONIGHT.

 

* LOCATIONS...IMPACTED AREAS INCLUDE A LARGE PART OF THE PIEDMONT AND THE NORTHERN COASTAL PLAIN... INCLUDING THE TRIAD...THE TRIANGLE AND ROANOKE RAPIDS.

 

* HAZARD TYPES...RAIN WILL QUICKLY CHANGE OVER TO HEAVY WET SNOW FROM WEST TO EAST THROUGH THIS EVENING. A LITTLE MIXED SNOW AND SLEET IS POSSIBLE AT ONSET.

 

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...STORM TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS OF 3 TO 5 INCHES ARE EXPECTED IN THE WARNING AREA.

 

* TIMING...THE CHANGEOVER IS EXPECTED IN THE TRIAD REGION BY EARLY THIS EVENING... REACHING THE TRIANGLE AREA BY MID EVENING. THE SNOW WILL DIMINISH WEST TO EAST AFTER 1 AM... ENDING IN THE EAST BY 4 AM. MOST OF THE HEAVY SNOW IS EXPECTED TO FALL BETWEEN 7 PM AND 1 AM.

 

* IMPACTS...SNOWFALL RATES OF 1 TO 2 INCHES PER HOUR WILL QUICKLY ACCUMULATE... ESPECIALLY ON GRASSY SURFACES AS WELL AS BRIDGES   AND OVERPASSES. THE WARM AND WET PAVEMENT WILL LIMIT ACCUMULATION INITIALLY... BUT AS SNOWFALL RATES INCREASE...   ROADS WILL BEGIN TO GET SNOW COVERED AND SLUSHY. AS TEMPERATURES DROP TO NEAR OR BELOW FREEZING LATE TONIGHT INTO FRIDAY MORNING... ROADS WILL BECOME VERY SLICK AND DANGEROUS...  ESPECIALLY WEST OF THE TRIANGLE. TRAVEL WILL REMAIN TREACHEROUS THROUGH MOST OF FRIDAY MORNING.

 

* WINDS...NORTHEAST WINDS OF 15 TO 25 MPH THIS EVENING AND TONIGHT WILL GUST PERIODICALLY TO AROUND 30 MPH.

 

* TEMPERATURES...TEMPERATURES WILL FALL THROUGH THE 30S THROUGH  EARLY TO MID EVENING... AND TO THE 26 TO 32 DEGREE RANGE BY DAYBREAK FRIDAY. TEMPERATURES WILL STRUGGLE TO CLIMB THROUGH THE 30S ON FRIDAY.

 

* VISIBILITIES...VISIBILITIES MAY BE REDUCED TO LESS THAN A HALF MILE IN SNOW AND FOG.

 

* PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...A WINTER STORM WARNING MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS. ONLY TRAVEL IN AN EMERGENCY. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL...KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT... FOOD...AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. YOUNG OR INEXPERIENCED DRIVERS SHOULD AVOID DRIVING DURING THIS WINTRY WEATHER.
