NC lawmakers gather for 1-day organizing meeting

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- The North Carolina General Assembly is kicking off its two-year session with a nod to government efficiency.

Lawmakers are gathering Wednesday for one day for the first time to elect chamber leaders, approve debate rules and hand out gavels to committee chairs before going home until Jan. 30.

The Republican-led Legislature approved a law last summer creating the early organizational meeting. Many legislators argue they had been performing little substantive work in the first weeks of each two-year session.

House Speaker Thom Tillis says meeting early ensures the Legislature would have leadership in place when the new governor took office. Gov. Pat McCrory plans to visit the Legislative Building on Wednesday.

The chambers are expected to elect Tills and Sen. Phil Berger to additional two-year terms leading their respective chambers.
