NC Rep. LaRoque resigning from House

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina Rep. Stephen LaRoque is resigning from the state House in the wake of a federal indictment and plans for the chamber to investigate his activities.

LaRoque signed a letter dated Wednesday telling Speaker Thom Tillis that he's resigning effective Aug. 1.

Tillis and others had turned up pressure on the Kinston Republican to resign in the week since LaRoque was indicted by a grand jury.

Tillis said earlier Wednesday he was forming a bipartisan House committee to examine the case and see what action, if any, was warranted against LaRoque.

LaRoque said in his letter he didn't want his continued presence at the General Assembly to be politicized and denied the charges against him.
